The Natural State: An Ode to Arkansas Series

The Natural State is a collection of paintings portraying activities one can do in our state, often overlooked for its exciting possibilities. I began this journey by having the idea to combine my two loves, painting and the outdoors. I envisioned colorful acrylics on canvas and once finished, framed with natural pine wood.

The Natural State isn’t just representing our dear Arkansas. It is a representation of a state of mind. Having a natural state of mind and being unified with nature is my goal for this collection. This particular mindset seems to be lost in today’s overly digitized world. I used extreme perspectives and close up views so that the viewer feels drawn in as though they are in the painting. I also used subtle, organic colors in the landscapes of each piece because I wanted the viewer to feel the tranquility. To contrast that, I used vibrant hues in the active elements. I wanted to convey the adventurous spirit one experiences when doing something that unites them with the earth.

With this collection, I want to take a fresh approach beyond landscapes. I’m hoping my paintings intrigue and draw people in, then compel them to go out and enjoy all that Arkansas has to offer. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Live in the sunshine, swim in the sea, breathe in the wild air.”
